Chris Turner and Rachel Maloney often play as a duo. They draw from more than 30 years of experience. Much of their repertoire comes from their extensive touring. In the true Bardic tradition, they have been given many musical treasures which they continue to share with all whom they meet, be they players or listeners.

The music they play is primarily instrumental and can be hauntingly beautiful or fast and furious. When joined by a variety of musical companions, their repertoire includes songs from ballads to blues, from both Europe and America.

They are a favorite for wedding ceremonies and receptions but are perfect for parties and any of the above venues.

 

Bands and Musical Ensembles

The Whompers is a Rhode Island based bands consisting of Chris Turner, Rachel Maloney, and Steve Jobe. They play a mixture of American and European traditional music. After 25 years of musical friendship, they have developed a sound reminiscent of a chamber group. With violin, viola, harmonica, bagpipes, and hurdy-gurdy, they blend a myriad of harmonics to create a rich and lucious sound.

The Providence Wholebellies is a larger acoustic ensemble that epitomizes fun. Their repertoire encompasses Appalachian fiddle tunes, country blues, jug band, Irish pub songs, with a smattering of Breton, Welsh, and more. The line-up is a treat: fiddle, viola, harmonica, squeeze-box, bass, washboard, banjo, guitar, bagpipes, virtuoso digeree doo, and lots of vocals.

This band is able to perform totally acoustic in most situations. A P.A. system can be provided if necessary.

Chris Turner and the Blue Hussars is an electric dance band featuring lots of blues and swing. A favorite of the dancers is a toe tapping boogie band which has inspired many to shake their tail feathers. They have a driving beat featuring virtuoso harmonica improvisations, electric guitar, keyboards, electric violin, bass, and drums.

Hair of the Dog is an acoustic ensemble with violin, viola, guitar, mando-cello, bodhran, and a variety of other instruments. With the addition of masterful bodhran and percussion, this group can provide anything from the sublime to the driving rhythms of the dance floor.

Wu Ji - Chris and Rachel are joined by the German-born percussionist Peter Gresch. This threesome make use of both acoustic and electronic instrumentation to create an environment of sound that is inspirations, meditative, and spiritual. Wu Ji is a great compliment of yoga, massage, or simple relaxation in a world full of stress. They have a CD available and are also able to provide workshops using sound in the human voice to fine hone the abilities of an individual to concentrate and focus, to relax, and to free the spirit in a voice of self expression.

The Repeatos - This is a six piece electronic ensemble that embodies creativity. Improvisation and self-expression are credo. The Repeatos are original and constantly changing. Their path is one of musical discovery and self discovery. The Repeatos are wild, free, happy, sad, and just about any emotion imaginable. It ranges from highly sophisticated and abstract to totally danceable and fun. The music and vocals are always full of surprises and offer a fantastic alternative to the pabulum of everyday popular music.

Aurea is a classical ensemble that synthesizes music and poetry to create a rich and profound musical experience. Charles Sherba (violin) and Consuelo Sherba (viola) bring not only their supreme musical excellence to the group, but they also bring a lifetime of musical companionship. Chris Turner adds the unusual and haunting sound of the harmonica - a rare treat.

A piano accompaniment supplies the musical bed while Nigel Gore lends his wonderful voice and profound interpretation of the written word.

Chris Turner, Marty Ballou, and Tom Enright form a blues trio with a combination of musical expertise hard to match anywhere. All three are not only master musicians, but are also improvisers extraordinaire. The ability of these three to constantly amaze the audience is indisputable.

Their music is not only technically astounding, but the heart and soul of which they play bring so much emotion that the audience always cry for more.
